Position Announcements
Postdoc in coastal nitrogen cycling
Postdoc Position (m/f)
Code-No. 2012/KB 1
The place of employment is Geesthacht.
The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, near Hamburg, and in Teltow, near Berlin, conducts materials and coastal research. You can find more information at http://www.hzg.de.
The Institute for Coastal Research, located in Geesthacht, Germany, invites applications for a 1-year Postdoc Position (m/f) in coastal nitrogen cycling to work in the newly founded institute for Biogeochemistry in Coastal Seas. The work will be carried out in close co-operation with the Helmholtz Young Investigators Group “Sources, sinks and internal cycling of nitrogen in coastal waters”.
The coastal zone is loaded with anthropogenic nitrogen from riverine and atmospheric sources, leading to widespread eutrophication The North Sea in particular is exposed to high riverine nutrient loads, which is counteracted by intense sediment denitrification. Knowledge of rates and regulation of denitrification as well as its impact on water column isotope inventories is still incomplete.
We are looking for a Postdoctoral researcher to develop and apply methods to investigate rates of sedimentary denitrification using MIMS an IPT. These rates shall be linked to nitrification and water column nitrogen inventories and isotope data.
The successful candidate should hold a PhD in Geosciences or a related field, and should have worked with nitrogen cycling dynamics. Experience with membrane inlet mass spectrometry (MIMS) and stable isotope techniques is an advantage. Interested candidates should be highly motivated, organized, and willing to work in a young, interdisciplinary research team.
The appointment is initially for 1 year, starting date is negotiable, but ideally in February 2012.
We offer an appropriate salary related to TV-AVH as well as the usual public sector social benefits. The advancement of equality at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht goes without saying; in particular, we are striving to increase the percentage of women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.
