Welcome to ASLO!
For more than 50 years, ASLO has been a leading professional organization for researchers and educators in the field of aquatic science, working to provide for their needs at all phases of professional development. ASLO is best known for its highly rated research journals, its interdisciplinary meetings and its special symposia. The society supports increasingly important programs in public education and outreach and public policy. It strives to encourage student participation and to increase opportunities for minorities in the aquatic sciences. ASLO's mission statement is:
ASLO fosters a diverse, international scientific community that creates, integrates and communicates knowledge across the full spectrum of aquatic sciences, advances public awareness and education about aquatic resources and research, and promotes scientific stewardship of aquatic resources for the public interest. Its products and activities are directed toward these ends.

- Ecological Dissertations in the Aquatic Sciences (Eco-DAS) 2012
- Eco-DAS X will be held 8-13 October, 2012, at the University of Hawai`i. Invited participants, mentors and representatives of federal funding agencies will meet for six days to present and discuss state of the art research in the ecology of aquatic ecosystems, to strengthen existing collaborations and form new partnerships, and to discuss the most challenging issues in squatic ecology today. The proceedings of the symposium will be published as an open-access, web-based book. for more information, see the Eco-DAS website. Application deadline is 31 March 2012.
- 2012 Summer Course in Microbial Oceanography
- The Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education (CMORE) 2012 summer training course in microbial oceanography "Genomes to Biomes" will be held at the University of Hawaii, May 29-July 6, 2012. The course is offered to graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and early career faculty with interests in marine microbiology and biological oceanography. For information and application materials, please visit the course website. Application deadline is Jan. 27, 2012.

- Announcement: EU-US Training in Bioinformatics Workshop
- The workshop will provide a resource for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and new faculty to acquire the skill-set necessary for proper experimental design as well as analyzing diversity, (meta)genomics, (meta)transcriptomics, (meta)proteomics, (meta)metabolomics, and associated environmental contextual data from the marine environment. For more information, click here.
- Request for Education & Outreach Proposals
- The Center for Dark Energy Biosphere Investigations is pleased to announce grants (up to $50,000) are available to fund research or education/outreach projects on any area of marine deep biosphere topics. The C-DEBI Education and Outreach Grants Program will fund the development of educational opportunities and materials that are pertinent to deep biosphere research in the sedimentary or igneous ocean basement. For more information, click here.
- New L&O e-Lecture Published
- The latest in ASLO's series of electronic lectures is Ocean acidification, the other CO2 problem, by Richard Feely (NOAA/PMEL) and Scott Doney (WHOI). The complete e-Lecture is available at no cost to ASLO members. For a preview of the lecture or to learn more, click here.
- Limnology and Oceanography: Fluids and Environments Call for Papers
- L&O:F&E seeks manuscripts treating research on any aspect of limnology and oceanography where advection and/or diffusion or the mechanics of the medium drive biological, chemical, or geological processes from molecular to global scales. For more information please download the call for papers or visit the journal website.
